We first scale and polish your teeth and check for decay or gum problems, because whitening gel should only be applied to healthy teeth. In-clinic whitening takes about an hour. Take-home trays are custom-made and worn daily for one to two weeks. Some sensitivity for a day or two is normal and settles by itself. Crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour, so we plan the shade around any existing dental work.
At the design visit we discuss the shape and shade you want and can show a mock-up on your teeth. Porcelain veneers then require minimal preparation of the tooth surface, an impression or digital scan, and a second visit about two weeks later to bond the final veneers. Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth in one appointment.
Brush and floss daily, limit coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, wear a night guard if you grind your teeth, and return for scaling every six months. Whitening can be topped up with take-home gel; veneers and crowns should be checked at each review.
Clinic whitening uses a higher concentration of whitening gel applied with gum protection, so results are faster and more even. Take-home trays made by your dentist are a gentler option that you use over one to two weeks.
Usually two to three: a consultation and smile design, tooth preparation with temporary veneers, and fitting of the final porcelain veneers. Composite veneers can often be completed in a single visit.
Porcelain veneers involve removing a thin layer of enamel, so they are considered permanent and are replaced rather than removed. Composite veneers are more easily repaired or replaced.
